Take your time when looking to add a pet to the family. Make sure you evaluate the potential pet's personality, temperament, energy level and size to find the right fit for your household while keeping in mind the ages of your children.
Ask the breeder, shelter or rescue if the pet is good with kids. Online sites like adoptapet.com and petfinder.com will sometimes reference the pet's disposition around children in the descriptions of the pets up for adoption.
Involve your kids every step of the way from picking out a pet to taking responsibility for the pet care once the pet is in your home. Kids older than 5 or 6 years of age can help care for the pet including feeding, watering, exercising, playing and training. Teach your kids how to behave correctly and safely around the pet so that each interaction is a positive one. Never leave small children unattended with a pet.
The Pro Plan Performance Team, consisting of more than 15 remarkably talented canines, entertains audiences at Purina Farms with extraordinary feats of athleticism and skill.
