Moms and dads welcoming their newborns into the world at Mercy Hospital St. Louis will be doing so in spa-like conditions when the hospital's new Maternity Welcome Center and Labor and Birth Suites open Jan. 28.
The renovated rooms were designed around the feedback the hospital received from moms, said Heather Thompson, executive director of women's services at Mercy Hospital. The moms asked for a "high tech" and "high touch" birth place.
Thirty-one new birth suites span two floors and offer updated decor, room for healthcare providers and family members, and the latest in medical monitoring technology, according to the hospital's news release. Rooms also have massaging showers, whirlpool tubs, birthing balls, flat-screen TVs and sleeping options for birthing partners. Small waiting rooms, six surgical suites for those needing Caesarian sections, and 11 private pre-op and recovery rooms are also included in the new space. Nurses are trained to provide labor support involving movement, massage, hydrotherapy, music therapy and aromatherapy.
To access the maternity department, women now check-in at the Maternity Welcome Center, located just inside the main hospital lobby entrance. The welcome center includes interview and exam rooms where healthcare providers can evaluate moms for labor.
Nearly 8,000 babies are born at Mercy Hospital St. Louis each year.
