Welcome a new tree 'roo to the Saint Louis Zoo! Rocket, a Matschie tree kangaroo joey born six months ago at the Saint Louis Zoo, is now peeking out of his mother's pouch in their home in the Emerson Children's Zoo.
Although he was only the size of a lima bean at birth, Rocket is now the size of a small cat and is able to climb out of mother Kasbeth's pouch and even does a bit of exploring. He is expected to move out of the pouch at around 10 months old but will continue to nurse until he is at least 16 months old. Rocket is the fifth offspring of Kasbeth and father Iri.
The endangered Matschie's tree kangaroo is a small marsupial found only in the thick, mountainous forests of Papua New Guinea. It can leap as far as 30 feet from a tree to the ground.
Admission to the Emerson Children's Zoo is $4 per person; ages 2 and under are free. The zoo offers free admission to the Children's Zoo daily the first hour the zoo is open.
Saint Louis Zoo is located at One Government Dr., St. Louis, 63110. Call 314-781-0900 for more information.
