After years of experience in social work, nursing and working with families, Schnetzer and Loughren shared a vision to open a center providing exemplary parent-focused education, training and development opportunities in the St. Louis area. The center opened its doors in late July, providing families in St. Louis resources, credible information and the support needed to care for and parent children, regardless of demographics.
Schnetzer learned quickly after the birth of her first child that the choices are many for new parents – cloth diapers or disposable, breastfeeding or bottle, parenting style and more. "There is no one right way, and parents don't always have the time to do all of the research." said Kate Schnetzer, founder of Parenting Resources. "We are here to provide people with the resources they need to make the decisions that work for their families. To see people connect and support each other is what is important to us."
Parents are provided with a number of opportunities to connect with one another at support groups and play groups - Circle of Moms, Circle of Working Moms, Babywearing Playgroup – all of which are free to join. The topics discussed are relevant to young families, including: Balancing Work and Families, Newborn/Toddler Nutrition, Transitions and Tantrums and much more.
Some of the classes available to new and expecting parents include prenatal classes, childbirth preparation, new parent workshops and child enrichment. The center also provides consultations for babywearing, car seat installation and in-center or home visits for breast-feeding.
The practice of babywearing – carrying or wearing a baby in a carrier or sling - has grown in popularity in recent years. Baby carriers can make parenting easier when caring for multiple children or a fussy baby. Schnetzer herself has been trained by the Babywearing Institute to become a certified babywearing educator. During a consultation, she is able to help parents with positioning and finding the right carrier that provides both comfort and safety for the baby.
The center also has a retail component featuring a large assortment of baby carriers, teething tools and breastfeeding supplies.
