Through Born to Read, the library will distribute goodie bags to new parents at four area hospitals. Parents will bring home tools to share the joy of reading with their new bundle of joy, including a board book, bath toy, milestones marker, activities calendar and instructions on how to obtain a library card. Gift bags will also include a special invitation to return to the library on the child's first birthday to receive another free book.
"Studies show that when children start behind, they stay behind," said Library Director Kristen Sorth. "The goal of Born to Read is to foster a love of reading starting at birth and to emphasize the importance of reading to children of even the youngest age."
Participating hospitals include St. Anthony's Medical Center, SSM DePaul Health Center, St. Clare Health Center and Missouri Baptist Medical Center.
The library also announced a new program aimed at inspiring an interest in science, technology and art among older children and teens. STArt @ Your Library is an expansion of Art @ Your Library and will feature free programs ranging from space exploration to ballet and include presentations by the Saint Louis Zoo, Stages St. Louis, the Saint Louis Science Center, Imaginary Theatre Company, Mad Science St. Louis and others.
