Updated Aug. 27 Being lost among the rows of a winding, seemingly never-ending corn maze can be a little intimidating, but this year one local maze has announced plans that are downright “wicked.” The theme for this year’s Great Godfrey Maze will be inspired by the Broadway blockbuster musical “Wicked,” which returns to the Fabulous Fox Theatre Dec. 9, 2015-Jan. 3, 2016.
The musical “Wicked” takes audiences to a time before the Kansas farm girl landed in Oz and tells the story of the two young women who later become known as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. The 7-acre maze will be cut into a graphic image based on the blockbuster’s legendary artwork.
“The Village of Godfrey is extremely pleased to be partnering with the Fabulous Fox and ‘Wicked’ on this year’s Great Godfrey Maze,” said Mayor Michael McCormick. “It is a thrill to be working with such great institutions. It is exciting to have the national tour back in St. Louis at the Fabulous Fox and even more exciting to bring a piece of it to Godfrey.”
Great Godfrey Maze will open with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 6 p.m. Sept. 4. "Wicked" fans are invited to attend dressed as their favorite characters for a chance to win tickets to see the musical at Fabulous Fox. The maze will also offer special activities during the Fall Corn Festival Sept. 26 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., including music, games, inflatables, face painting and more.
Great Godfrey Maze will be open weekends Sept. 4-Oct. 31 and will offer a haunted maze after dark beginning Oct. 3. The maze is held in Glazebrook Park, which is located at 1401 Stamper Lane, Godfrey, IL, 62035. Tickets to the maze are $6 for guests 12 and up, $4 for ages 6-11 and free for 5 and under.
