Kirkwood Public Library will celebrate 90 years of serving patrons with a year-long birthday party that will feature two contests aimed at showcasing the talent of area youth.
The library, which was founded in 1926 as a small, volunteer-run organization, will commemorate its anniversary by publishing a collection of work by young authors. Writers in kindergarten through 12th grade may submit original works, including poetry, song lyrics, essays, short stories or other forms of creative writing, for publication in "Young Authors Celebrating 90 Years." Books will be published and sold in October, with proceeds benefiting Kirkwood Public Library's Endowment Fund.
Entries must be no more than five double-spaced pages. Original artwork may be included but must not exceed the maximum page length. Young authors may receive assistance from an adult with typing their entries. The Youth Services Department is also available to assist young authors with typing. The deadline to enter is June 6. Call the Youth Services Department at 314-821-5770, ext. 1015 for more information.
Kirkwood Public Library will also unveil a new library card. Artists of all ages are invited to submit possible designs incorporating the library’s 90th birthday. Winning artwork will be chosen in each of three categories: children, teens and adults. Visit the library to pick up an entry form. All entries must be submitted by March 20. Winners will be announced at a summer reading kick-off celebration May 21.
On March 2, Kirkwood Public Library will unveil a new digital collection of historical photographs documenting the City of Kirkwood. Library patrons may also celebrate the anniversary by supporting the library's endowment fund, which will help ensure the Kirkwood Public Library is able to continue to meet the community's needs in the future. Donations may be made online.
"We’re so proud to have served the Kirkwood community for 90 years," said Sarah Erwin, director of the Kirkwood Public Libray. "We are lucky to be a part of such a supportive and vibrant community and look forward to 90 more years!"
