MAY 31, 2011 – Ride your bike with the residents of Vinita Park and Trailnet, as they dedicate Vinita Park's new bike and pedestrian trail at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 4. The trail connects local residents to the Charles M. Forrester Park, city hall, and the Indian Trails Branch of the St. Louis County Library while providing a safe and shaded way to travel from Page Avenue to Midland Boulevard.
Due to the recent deaths of two Vinita Park Police Officers, the Vinita Park Mayor and Board have approved an official renaming of the trail to "The Vinita Park Memorial Trail." The trail will be dedicated to the memory of "those who have made the City of Vinita Park a safe and beautiful place to live." Members of the community are invited to submit plans for a memorial at the trailhead and can be sent to the Mayor's Office, Vinita Park City Hall, 8374 Midland Blvd. Vinita Park, Mo., 63114.
Trailnet, a nonprofit agency dedicated to fostering healthy and active communities, has facilitated the trail building as part of their continued partnership with the City of Vinita Park. In 2009, Trailnet received a grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health to fund the Touchstone Project which includes physical improvements to the trail, teaching the Earn-2-Bikes bike maintenance and safety class, hosting monthly bicycle rides, educating employers about bike-friendly workplace policies and working with Vinita Park to adopt land use policies that promote physical activity. Trailnet's partnership with Vinita Park began through Trailnet's creation of the city's Bikeable–Walkable Community Plan, completed in 2007.
