Get lost in a good book
Central to motherhood is nurturing young readers. But when was the last time you savored a book ... one without pictures? If you work downtown, duck into Central Library to check out a book. You can even grab a bite during your visit at Urban Eats Cafe. Want to expand your reading experience? Start a book group or join one through Left Bank Books in the Central West End, the Foundry Art Centre in St. Charles or at a variety of branches of the St. Louis County Library.
Escape to Augusta
We've touted the family-friendly things to do in Augusta in the past, but there's no denying its wineries make for great adult-only afternoons. Grab a seat on the sprawling deck of Montelle Winery and enjoy live music on Saturday and Sunday afternoons through mid-November. Or make a reservation for bluff-top patio seating at Mount Pleasant Estates. At Mount Pleasant Estates, you can learn more about the wine-making process by taking a free tour offered on weekends at noon and 1 p.m. through October. Don't forget your designated driver.
Work up a sweat
Few things are as good for you physically, emotionally and mentally as getting a great workout. If you need some motivation and inspiration, join Moms in Training, a group of moms who work out together, play together and raise money for Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. If you want to work out with your baby in tow, consider Stroller Strides, offered by Fit 4 Mom in West St. Louis County. Or, grab your shoes and go for a run or walk at a neighborhood trail. A favorite of ours is the River Scene Trail at Castlewood State Park. The 3.25-mile trail travels along the Meramec River before sending you up more than 200 feet of stairs where you will be rewarded with stunning bluff-top views.
Take a deep breath
Slow down and breathe deep during a unique yoga class in Forest Park. Dianna Lucas offers Yoga at the Grand Basin most Saturday and Sunday mornings and Tuesday and Wednesday evenings when weather permits. No prior yoga experience is needed, and live music is often a part of the practice. And, if it's been awhile since you've stopped and smelled the roses, so to speak, plan a visit to Long Row Lavender, a lavender farm in Wright City. Browse the heavenly smelling gift shoppe, enjoy a sample treat, and when lavender is in season, you can see the blooms before they are harvested.
Find inspiration through art
Surround yourself with art by taking a stroll through Saint Louis Art Museum, Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis, the Pulitzer Arts Foundation, or the Kemper Art Museum. If you're feeling inspired to fill your own canvas but prefer a step-by-step tutorial and a glass of liquid courage, check out Painting With a Twist and Pinot's Palette. If it's nostalgia you prefer, join 4 Quarters Timeless Vintage in Dardenne Prairie for a monthly Paint Party.
