Everyone — especially parents, babysitters and caregivers — should know how to perform CPR.
CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) is a lifesaving procedure used to keep blood pumping through the heart when a person is not breathing normally or at all. CPR is necessary when the child:
• Cannot breathe, cough or talk
• Appears blue
• Is unconscious or unresponsive
According to the American Heart Association, 80 percent of cardiac emergencies occur in the home, so knowing how to perform CPR could help you save the life of someone you know and care about.
Consider signing up for a CPR class! St. Louis Children’s Hospital offers Family and Friends ® CPR classes. Registered nurses from St. Louis Children's Hospital use the American Heart Association's material to provide this important information. Through hands-on practice, participants will learn:
• Rescue breathing, which provides oxygen to the lungs
• Chest compressions, which continues blood flow to the heart
• Infant, child and adult CPR
• First aid for choking
• How to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) when appropriate
To learn about Family and Friends® CPR dates and to register, call St. Louis Children's Hospital at 314-454-KIDS (5437).
Note: Family and Friends® CPR does not include certification upon completion.
For over 130 years, Children's Hospital and its Washington University School of Medicine physician partners have remained a resource for pediatric health and wellness for the St. Louis region and beyond.
