Team Beer and Salsa is preparing to participate in the Pedal the Cause Bike Challenge Sept. 23-24. Founded in 2010, Pedal the Cause’s mission is to help fund cancer research at Siteman Cancer Center and Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Pedal the Cause has raised nearly $16 million to date; since it formed in 2012, Team Beer and Salsa has raised more than $22,000 for the organization. One hundred percent of the money raised by cyclists is used to help fund cancer research in St. Louis.
“Our team has been selected for the ‘Ride for a Child’ program,” said Beer and Salsa Team Captain Boris Plotnitskiy said. “We’re honored to ride for 8-year-old Alexis, who is in remission from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia after nearly three years of treatment at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.”
Participants register to complete one of six courses of varying levels of difficulty and then commit to a fundraising goal. Plotnitskiy will complete the Century Course, a challenging 100-mile route that, like the disease they fight, is largely an uphill battle.
“This summer we are raising our bar in support of Alexis and others who are battling cancer on the front lines,” Plotnitskiy said. “We’ve set a team fundraising goal of $15,000, and hope to grow our team to 20 members.”
Those who would like to support Team Beer and Salsa as a corporate sponsor, which includes having a logo placed on the official team jersey, may contact Plotnitskiy by calling 314-365-6659 or by e-mail at [email protected] by July 3. Private donations can be made on the team’s Pedal the Cause profile. Those who would like to “Pedal the Cause” alongside Team Beer and Salsa may join the team by registering on the Pedal the Cause website and selecting select ride for existing team, Beer and Salsa. Note that in addition to the Century course, other members of the team will be completing courses that are 50, 25 and 10 miles in length.
This year, several children will ride alongside Alexis in the Ameren Kids Challenge Sept. 23 at Chesterfield Amphitheater, which includes looped courses for children ages 3-7 and ages 8-12. Registration for the Ameren Kids Challenge is $35 and includes a medal, a t-shirt, a goody bag, a Fitz’s root beer float and more.
“Every stroke of the pedal is a victory,” Plotnitskiy said.
