“Our goal,” explains Sarah Sims, Manager of K-12 Education Programs, “is to facilitate experiences in which students get to make connections between the people, places, and stories of history and their own lives.”
During the school year, the Missouri History Museum K-12 Education team creates and facilitates guided Gallery + Classroom experiences in both the featured exhibitions and the permanent galleries. The programs are two hours in length, giving the students time to engage with artifacts in the exhibition and complete a classroom activity that builds on what they saw in the gallery space. Museum educators, expert facilitators trained in museum and classroom education, differentiate the activities based on student ability level and interests.
For the fall semester, the Museum is offering 11 different guided programs in the permanent and special exhibitions, as well as at the Library and Research Center. Students can discover the drawings of Lewis and Clark, connect with the stories of St. Louis Civil Rights activists, be a Curator for a Day and more! For a complete listing of tours and available dates see the K-12 Programs Brochure.
Notes Sims, “I often reflect on my work here at the Museum and am so excited by all of the potential a museum visit has to expand the classroom space and contribute to a more holistic learning process.”
