Vulture Awareness Day, Sept. 23
World Bird Sanctuary will join zoos and conservation groups around the world for a Vulture Awareness Day Celebration — however, World Bird Sanctuary holds its celebration a little later in the month than the international date, so it has more species of vultures to show since they return mid-month from the zoo show programs that are presented across the country. This year the sanctuary is holding its event on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. This free event, which is sponsored by Ameren Missouri, will feature crafts, activities, concessions, souvenirs, a vulture-themed scavenger hunt and demonstrations by Dorothy, the Andean condor. Visitors will also be treated to vulture flight shows at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
World Bird Sanctuary Annual Open House, Oct. 7-8
On the first weekend in October, World Bird Sanctuary celebrates its year’s close with the annual open house. Visit the sanctuary on either day for an all-access pass to World Bird Sanctuary. You'll be able to see everything that WBS does to achieve its mission of preserving bird species and their habitats. Behind-the-scenes tours of the endangered species breeding area and animal behavior and training center are a highlight, as these areas are closed to the public at all other times of the year. Back-to-back bird and animal programs and concerts keep you entertained while teaching you all about World Bird Sanctuary's amazing animals. It's a jam-packed day with something to delight everyone in the family! WBS will be joined by many of its conservation and science partners from around the area, so be sure to join the sanctuary for a great weekend!
OWLoween, Oct. 28
Get a little superstitious at World Bird Sanctuary's brand new OWLoween event Oct. 28 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. At this free event, guests can learn more about owls, vultures and other favorite OWLoween creatures. Visitors can watch live animal shows at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., navigate a straw maze, make crafts, compete in a costume contest, trick or treat and purchase snacks. WBS will also host a Halloween-themed Pokehunt at noon (an additional $5 charge per child applies).
Come over to the dark side and meet those amazing birds that exist by moonlight. Owl Prowls offer an exciting opportunity to learn more about the amazing life of owls. Spend an evening with a WBS naturalist who will introduce you to live owls and their unique calls. Then, take an easy night hike through the grounds to try to call in a wild owl!
