Construction is progressing rapidly at Kirkwood's newest park, Avery Park, at the intersection of Avery and Harrison in Kirkwood, said Murray Pounds, director of Parks and Recreation for the city. Pounds is hoping the park will open in early October.
When it does open, Avery Park will be Kirkwood's first park north of Manchester Road. The three-quarter acre neighborhood park will include two playgrounds, one for kids 2-5, another for kids 6-12; a pavilion; swings; a half basketball court; a spray mister; and walking paths and landscaping, Pounds said.
"For a long time, the city has recognized that the northern part of Kirkwood is underserved by the park system," Pounds said. When two adjacent properties went on the market, the city acquired them for the purpose of constructing a park, he said. Development of the park is funded in part by a grant from the Municipal Park Grant Commission of St. Louis County. From the calendar
