In conjunction with the Presidential election, the Missouri History Museum is opening a special exhibit about the country's first president: George Washington.
"Discover the Real George Washington: New Views From Mount Vernon" opens on Friday, Oct. 19, at the Missouri History Museum. The exhibit includes about 100 original objects associated with Washington and his wife, Martha, including the former president's famous dentures.
The exhibition, which runs through Jan. 20, 2013, goes beyond the iconic image on the dollar bill to reveal the real George Washington as not only a general and president, but as a young land surveyor, experimental farmer and savvy entrepreneur, according to a museum news release.
"Although over a million people come to walk in Washington's footsteps at Mount Vernon each year, we know that not everyone will have a chance to visit his home," said Jim Rees, executive director of Mount Vernon, the former president's Virginia homestead. "We wanted to bring the fascinating story of Washington's life to people around the country by showing a wide variety of compelling personal belongings and some intriguing elements from our new Donald W. Reynolds Museum and Education Center."
The exhibit includes artifacts from Washington's youth, adulthood and final days, including paintings, books, maps, surveying equipment, Revolutionary War armaments, tools used by slaves, presidential table settings and Mrs. Washington's belongings. Three life-sized models of George Washington are also presented in the exhibit. The lifelike figures were created with the help of forensic scientists and historians.
Admission to the exhibit is $10 for adults and $8 for seniors, students, groups and active military. Visitors that buy one adult ticket will receive four complimentary children's tickets for youth living in the same household. Additional children's tickets are $4. Free admission is offered on Tuesdays from 2-8 p.m. for residents of St. Louis city and county.
