Thies Farm and Greenhouses is opening a third St. Louis-area location on Saturday, Dec. 1, just across the Missouri River from its Maryland Heights farm.
The 6-acre property that Thies Farm is leasing sits between the Katy Trail and the river at 3200 Green Bottoms Road, St. Charles, Mo., 63303. Thies Farms will operate a retail market, including a garden center, bakery and cafe, and fresh produce from the Maryland Heights farm. There is also a greenhouse on the site.
"It's a neat location, and we're really excited about it," said Dave Thies owner of Thies Farm and Greenhouses. "We're in a very rural country setting, and yet, across the road and up in the bluffs, there are thousands and thousands of houses."
Thies hopes to tap into this new market and also lure runners, bikers and walkers off the Katy Trail for a bite to eat in the cafe.
The St. Charles location is holding an open house from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 1, and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 2. Throughout December, Thies Farms plans to sell Christmas trees, poinsettias, garden center items, and some produce.
A grand opening will be planned for late March, Thies said. At that time, the bakery and cafe will open. This spring, Thies hopes to offer gardening classes and to host garden club meetings.
While the St. Charles location won't have a play area, it will be home to a treehouse that Thies Farms had a hand in building. The house was on display during the TREEmendous exhibit at the Missouri Botanical Garden in 2011. The house, which features green shingles and tree bark siding will be re-assembled at the St. Charles location.
