March 2 is Dr. Seuss's birthday, and, in honor of the beloved children's author, the NEA is once again encouraging teachers and families to participate in the National Read Across America Day, Friday, March 1. Several events are planned throughout the region to encourage little ones to discover a great book.
Free Story Times at CBL Malls On Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, listen to local media personalities, sports figures and educators read from their favorite kids' books. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. on Friday, March 1, at West County Center with a proclamation and the "Reading Oath." Story Times will take place at all five CBL Malls (Chesterfield Mall, Mid Rivers Mall, St. Clair Square, South County Center and West County Center) from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on both days. The first 25 children at each event who donate a new children's book will receive a free Dr. Seuss "Cat in the Hat" hat. Donations of new children's books will be accepted at each mall through March 31, 2013. Kids will even be treated to special appearances by costumed characters Clifford and Curious George, hands-on activities and more. To encourage reading all month long, children up to age 12 can read their way to a free treats. Complimentary bookmarks will be available at the story-telling events, customer service or select retailers, to help track the number of books read. Once a child reads four books, they can redeem the bookmark for free treats at participating mall eateries. See mall websites for details on character appearances, benefiting hospitals and more.
Green Eggs & Ham Breakfast Texas Roadhouse in St. Charles is unveiling a new menu item on March 2: green eggs and ham. Two seating times are available beginning at 9 a.m. and 9:45 a.m. All diners will eat breakfast, do an activity and hear "Green Eggs and Ham" read aloud. Seating is limited and advanced purchase is required. Tickets are $3 for kids and $5 for adults and can be purchased online. The event benefits the St. Charles City-County Library Foundation.
Read Across America: A Seussebration Enjoy stories, crafts, games and many Seussical surprises during this "Seussebration" at the St. Louis County Library Oak Bend Branch. The event from 2 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, is geared for those ages 4-8. Register on the library website.
Dr. Seuss Birthday Bash Join the Magic House for a party fit for Dr. Seuss and all his silly characters. The bash is Saturday March 2, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, March 3, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. See screenings of "The Cat in the Hat Knows a Lot About That!," get pictures taken with Dr. Seuss props, and meet The Cat in the Hat. Children 11 and under who bring in a new Dr. Seuss book ($5 minimum value) to be donated to a child in need will receive free museum admission during the Dr. Seuss weekend event.
