St. Louis-based PGAV Destinations will design the new 65,000-square-foot, $45-million aquarium coming to Union Station, according to St. Louis Union Station owner Lodging Hospitality Management.
Construction is expected to begin in fall 2017, with an anticipated completion date in summer 2019. St. Louis Aquarium, which will be located in Union Station’s former mall area, will house tanks containing aquatic species from the rivers and oceans of the world in 700,000 gallons of water.
PGAV Destinations, located in downtown St. Louis, has been involved in the design of exhibits around the country, including the Georgia Aquarium and Discovery Cove, as well as some local favorites, like Saint Louis Zoo’s Polar Bear Pointe, Sea Lion Sound, Penguin & Puffin Coast and the new Grizzly Ridge, which is scheduled to open at the zoo later this year.
The aquarium is part of Union Station’s planned $100 million family entertainment complex. Union Station has announced plans to open the St. Louis Wheel, a 200-foot-high observation wheel with 30 fully enclosed, climate-controlled gondolas that will each seat up to six adults. Visitors will be able to dine in train cars and shipping containers in The Train Park. The hotel also recently debuted the new Fire & Light Show at the Lake. St. Louis Union Station Hotel is also adding 28 new hotel rooms, which are expected to be complete by winter 2017.
The St. Louis Aquarium at Union Station will be an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and will employ a team of marine biologists and aquarists. The aquarium will be open 9 a.m.-7 p.m. daily.
