Wapelhorst and Blanchette aquatic facilities in St. Charles will both undergo renovations later this year. St. Charles Parks and Recreation Department has announced plans to close Wapelhorst July 23 to begin work on the pool. Blanchette will remain open through Aug. 13 with an extended lap swim season through Sept. 4. Renovations on both pools are expected to be complete by Memorial Day weekend 2018.
Based on a study by consultants, the Parks and Recreation Board recommended that Blanchette Aquatic Facility be demolished and a new aquatic facility be built nearby. The board also recommended several significant improvements at Wapelhorst Aquatic Facility.
The new Blanchette facility will feature a children’s activity area with zero-depth entry, a sprayground, a wet ledge, an activity pool, several slides, a rock climbing wall, an open swim area, an eight-lane lap pool and two diving boards. The renovated Wapelhorst facility will also have a zero-depth entry children’s area, a sprayground and a wet ledge, as well as a lazy river, open and closed body flume slides and a Boomerango group slide.
The improvements were made possible by Prop P, a 1/2 cent sales tax passed by voters in August 2016 that is also helping to fund stormwater projects. Prop P will also fund playground replacements, lighting upgrades at athletic fields and other ball field upgrades.
