Winterfest returns to downtown St. Louis, this year with an ice rink at Kiener Plaza.
If the start of another hockey season has your family eager to hit the ice, good news: the Gateway Arch Park Foundation and the St. Louis Blues will team up once again to bring Winterfest at the Arch presented by Centene to downtown St. Louis. This year’s event will include a rink made of real ice in Kiener Plaza, which reopened in May after a $20 million renovation.
The rink will open Nov. 18 with the celebration of the Ameren Festival of Lights and the lighting of the Salvation Army Tree of Lights. Winterfest, which is in its second year, will feature several special events, including a holiday craft market; One Nation night with the St. Louis Blues and St. Louis Cardinals Nov. 30; and a St. Louis Blues Holiday Toy Drive and viewing party on an outdoor screen Dec. 2.
“We’re excited to partner with Gateway Arch Park Foundation again to bring hockey and skating under St. Louis’ defining symbol to the world,” said Chris Zimmerman, president and CEO of business operations for the St. Louis Blues. “Last year’s Winterfest was a great success and we’re looking forward to a bigger and better festival this year.”
The rink will offer public skating Thursday-Sunday, 2-9 p.m., as well as on Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. Several programs will be available for children, including St. Louis Blues Try Hockey Free, Little Blues, 3-on-3 hockey league and a street hockey tournament. Entry to the rink is free; skate rentals are $12 for adults and $7 for children ages 10 and under. The rink will remain open through Jan. 1, 2018.
“We are incredibly grateful to our presenting sponsor Centene and our other wonderful sponsors for making Winterfest possible again this year,” said Eric Moraczewski, executive director of Gateway Arch Park Foundation. “Our first year partnering with the St. Louis Blues on this event was an amazing experience and we look forward to welcoming more visitors to Downtown St. Louis for a longer run with more events.”
The renovated Kiener Plaza project is part of an overall $380 million CityArchRiver project. The grand opening of the new Arch experience will be July 4, 2018, in partnership with the return of Fair Saint Louis.
