A unique new trail opening this month at Spanish Lake Park will give visitors of all ages a fun way to exercise and play together.
Spanish Lake Family Trail, a 1.4-mile loop, features four new exercise and playground stations, called pods, positioned side by side throughout the trail. The pods are designed for multigenerational use, creating a place for children to play as parents and grandparents exercise. Each pod features two exercise pieces, like a bench press, stationary bike or lap pull down bars, and two playground pieces, such as concrete animals, boogie boards and balance beams.
According to Mark Ohlendorf, president of the St. Louis County Parks Foundation, the Spanish Lake Family Trail is the first of its kind in the St. Louis area, though officials hope it won’t be the last. The Parks Foundation raised more than $100,000 for the project, and plans to install similar trails at other parks in the future. Families can explore the new trail during a dedication and ribbon cutting at 10 a.m. Aug. 23 at the pod south of Catfish Shelter near Fisherman’s Parking Lot.
