With a bit of hocus pocus, it's easy to sneak a little art, culture, science and history into your family’s Halloween activities! Several upcoming events offer fun opportunities to broaden your young mad scientist’s horizons:
Booterfly Halloween Fun | The Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House Ongoing throughout October Bug out with lots of creepy crawly things all month at Booterfly House at the Sophia M. Sachs Butterfly House. Visit the Scorpion’s Lair, explore Botanicals Gone Mad and listen to special stories. Kids can also celebrate the spooky season with their favorite creepy crawlies at the Bug Ball. Visitors can make crafts, play games and trick-or-treat at treat houses from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Oct. 26-27. Admission is $14 for adults, $12 for Missouri Botanical Garden members and free for children under 12 months. Online registration is required.
Halloween Concert | St. Peters Cultural Arts Centre 7 p.m., Oct. 17 The St. Charles County Symphony will perform Halloween-inspired music in costume at this free event. Children are invited to wear costumes for a special parade. Get the details.
Lemony Snicket's 'The Composer is Dead' | Powell Hall 2 p.m., Oct. 19 St. Louis Symphony Orchestra will host an afternoon of haunting tunes Oct. 14 at Powell Hall. Young sleuths will learn more about music as they try to help SLSO solve a whodunit at Lemony Snicket's "The Composer is Dead." The fun begins at 2 p.m. with an Instrument Playground, followed by the performance at 3 p.m. Tickets start at $8. Get the details.

Tails of the Night: A Celebration of Missouri’s Nocturnal Animals | Wildlife Rescue Center 4-8 p.m., Oct. 27 Get to know some fascinating creatures of the night on a nighttime hike at the Wildlife Rescue Center. Día de los Muertos| Missouri History Museum 11 a.m.-5 p.m., Oct. 27-28 Learn more about Latin American culture through food, music, art displays and altars at the Missouri History Museum’s free Día de los Muertos celebration. Spirits of the Past | Historic Daniel Boone Home 6-10:30 p.m., Oct. 20 Families can greet the ghosts of Missouri past at Spirits of the Past Oct. 20 from 6-10:30 p.m. at the Historic Daniel Boone Home. Ghosthunters ages 7 and up can wander along lantern-lit paths, listen to ballads of murder and hear "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." Pre-registration is recommended, as space is limited.
