How long have you called St. Louis home?
My wife, Ann, and I got married in 1983 and in April 1984, I joined the Cardinals big league team. We moved to St. Louis, and we've really been St. Louisans ever since. When that first off-season came around, my manager Whitey Herzog said that we might want to get connected with the community, and we really took his advice to heart.
Tell us about your children, Jen and Drew. How old are they, and did they grow up in St. Louis?
Our daughter, Jen, is 24, and our son, Drew, just turned 21. Jen is a graduate of the University of Missouri – St. Louis. She's an accountant working for KPMG in St. Louis. She loves her job, and she loves St. Louis. Drew is a junior at Mizzou studying communication. He's having a great time. He really enjoys school and his fraternity. Drew is very much an out-of-the-box thinker, so it's been a lot of fun for us to watch him grow and flourish.
You're announcing a lot more Cardinals games this year. Other than your family, what do you miss most about St. Louis when you're on the road?
It's hard to say other than my family. When I'm traveling I miss my connection to my hometown friends. It's not so much about places or things. It's about people. I have a lot of great friends in St. Louis, and I miss them when I'm on the road.
Where are your favorite family hangouts in St. Louis?
Our local family hangouts have evolved over time. When our kids were younger, we used to like to hang out at places like the zoo. Now that they're older, obviously our hangouts have changed.
I'm very fortunate that my family loves to come to Cardinals games, so I get to spend time with them at the stadium. It's a great connection for our family. We also spend a lot of time at the Chesterfield Presbyterian Church. That's an anchor for us and a very important part of our lives.
During the winter, Ann, Jen and I are always at the Chesterfield YMCA together. Ann is a personal trainer there, and Jen and I both love to work out, so that's a big part of our lives. Of course, with Drew away at school, he's not able to join us there during the school year.
We also love going to the Pageant for concerts. Drew and I love to go there to see our favorite comedian Brian Regan.
Another place we go as a family is Ted Drewes Of course, that's a classic hangout for families all around St. Louis, and we're no exception. We also love Dewey's Pizza in Chesterfield and the Corner Pub & Grill on Clarkson. We like Brio near Plaza Frontenac, which is a good meeting point on a Sunday afternoon since it's about halfway home from the ballpark.
As a family we'll often meet in the Chesterfield Valley to get food from restaurants like the Olive Garden, P.F. Chang's or California Pizza Kitchen. A lot of times we'll get takeout to bring home for our Thursday night family TV night tradition. We all love the show "The Office" so we call Thursday nights our Office Party. My wife Ann and I are very engaged with our faith and believe that family is a great gift and something that needs to be prioritized.
Does your family spend much time on the road with you?
Ann came out to San Diego this year, and she and Jen are going to join me in Chicago this year. Drew may join me in Miami in August.
Maybe you already get your fill of sporting events through your affiliation with the Cardinals, but are there any other places you like to take your family to watch sports?
Absolutely. We go to Blues games every once in a while. I love to do that. We also go to several Rams games as a family. Drew and I go on trips to see Major League Soccer championships. And, as the local director of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, I stay very connected to the high school sports community.
Other than your time in the broadcast booth or with your family, what are your passions?
Well, as I mentioned, the Fellowship of Christian Athletes is a big part of my life. We work with local athletes to help them explore their faith and its connection to sports. Mostly we work on the high school level, and we interact with about 6,000 athletes each year. It's a big part of my life. I also love working out and playing golf. Golf is a major release for me both at home and on the road. I also play bridge during the off-season with a group of my former Cardinals teammates.
