The recipe for a great afternoon: One delicious cupcake, a scoop of butter cream frosting, a dash of sprinkles, a pinch of creativity, two little hands and lots of giggles. Put it all together and you have Sweetology, a new do-it-yourself cupcake bar in Ladue.
Opened in late April 2014, Sweetology helps visitors tap into their inner pastry virtuosos to create one-of-a-kind confectionary masterpieces. Guests purchase a kit that includes plain sugar cookies, a 6- or 9-inch cake, or large cupcakes. Cupcakes and cakes are available in chocolate or white, and are supplied by The Cup and The Cakery. Guests then select an all-over frosting and an accent frosting (chocolate or vanilla buttercream and fondant in a rainbow of colors); a variety of sprinkles and edible glitters; and a piping bag and tips.
After choosing their canvas and supplies, pastry artists can decorate their masterpiece in Sweetology's studio, called the Makery, where they have access to staff expertise and an arsenal of cookie cutters, rolling pins and other equipment. Chefs can then enjoy the sweet fruits of their labor with a cup of espresso in Sweetology's bistro-inspired seating area, package them to give as a gift or serve them at a special event.
Kits can also be purchased and packaged to go for sleepovers and birthday parties. Talk with a Sweetology specialist to find out what supplies you'll need if you plan to take a kit home; while take-home kits include most of the basics, a rolling pin, powdered sugar and cookie cutters are recommended when working with fondant. Also, a quick tutorial from a Sweetology employee is helpful, particularly if you're a pastry bag rookie.
At $10 an hour per person, studio time can be a bit pricey for larger families, but it is discounted when purchased as a package. For example, the four-pack cupcake take-home kit is $14, but can be decorated as a group or family in the studio for $24; a take-home kit for six sugar cookies is $12.50, but a small group or family could decorate in-studio for $22.50. Getting tips from Sweetology staff is a major perk to using the studio space; even sweeter is having all the fun of decorating cupcakes and cookies without having to clean up your own kitchen afterward.
The Makery accepts walk-ins and holds about 50 visitors. A second-floor Sweet Loft is also available for private parties and holds about 20 guests. Reservations are suggested for larger groups.
For young chefs, Sweetology hosts a variety of summer camps where kids can learn the basics of cake decorating, creating themed cakes like a chocolate tiki cake, an under the sea cake and more. Sweetology also offers Do It Yourself Cake Decorating Parties. With a wine selection and chic décor, it's a great destination for bridal and baby showers, birthday parties, retirement parties and corporate events.
Sweetology has signature, pre-decorated cakes available for order, and bulk candies that range from traditional jellybean flavors to the more exotic, like chili lime mango and dark chocolate bacon pretzel balls. The boutique also offers a ready-made cupcake each month, with a portion of the proceeds benefiting a local organization.
Sweetology is located at 914 Clayton Road, Ladue, MO, 63124. Call 314-736-4800 for party room reservations, information about upcoming camps, and other details.
