A familiar stand-by in the heart of downtown Kirkwood underwent a transformation this fall, just in time to celebrate its 60th year of serving St. Louis. McArthur’s Bakery, formerly located at 113 N. Kirkwood Rd., has moved across the street to new, larger digs, and expanded its services beyond the bakery to now include café-style gourmet sandwiches, soups, salads and enhanced breakfast choices. The new McArthur’s Bakery Café, now located at 210 N. Kirkwood Rd., Kirkwood, MO, 63122 (in between Adams Avenue and Jefferson Avenue), began welcoming patrons in mid-September.
The new digs are inviting and attractive, with warm wood-paneled walls, marble service counters and, of course, pastries on delicious display beneath glass cases. Take your pick from several seating options. On a pleasant fall day, enjoy the streetscape from the tall café tables just outside the entry door, or escape the elements to take in the scene from the cozy comfort of indoor tables spread along the large front windows. Behind the order counter, a small staircase leads to a loft seating area with banquettes, club chairs and even a family-style 12-seater community table. If you are in the mood for conversing with your lunch companions, but your kids aren’t, take a peek at the nook behind the long wooden table – a stockpile of board games are waiting to be borrowed by children bored by adult conversations. Wi-Fi and electrical outlets are available for those wishing to “plug in” while sipping their morning joe (McArthur’s serves up Chicago-based Intelligentsia Coffee).
The new McArthur’s boasts an enhanced breakfast menu, served all day (well, almost; breakfast items stopped being cooked up a little over an hour before close). That’s plenty of time to enjoy a fresh egg, provolone cheese and ham, sausage or bacon breakfast sandwich grilled between your choice of French or whole grain baguette or ciabatta bread. The tango takes the breakfast sandwich one step further with the addition of ancho chili sauce and pickled jalapenos to your egg, cheese and bacon on ciabatta, and the breakfast Lou sandwich features ham, sausage and provolone with a house-made honey butter.
Lunchtime offers a mix of basic, classic, signature and hot sandwiches, along with a selection of salads, soups and sides. The basics include a piled-high ham and Swiss, turkey, roast beef or chicken breast. Classics include a big BLT, the vegetarian No. 7, and house-made tuna or chicken salad (made with a traditional mayo base for now, but with aspirations to expand to weekly flavor variations). The lunchtime version of the Lou sandwich feels like a nod to The Hill with its ham, salami, roast beef, provolone and signature sauce. The warm three cheese and chutney panini is delicious sandwiched between cheese focaccia. Other selections include a California club, traditional pastrami, hot Italian beef and sweet ‘n’ sour Cubano. All sandwiches can be customized with your choice of bread or condiments, just ask, or opt for a half and half “pick two” substituting one of four salads or the day’s soup. Traditional sides (think chips, fruit, pasta salad and cole slaw) round out the menu. Children have a kids’ menu choice of grilled cheese or a build-your-own turkey, ham or roast beef sandwich.
Of course, no visit to McArthur’s is complete without picking up a fresh-baked yummy! See if you can resist a donut, pastry, bread, decorated cake, cookie or cupcake, or one of their famous gooey butter cakes. The new McArthur’s hasn’t changed its tradition of custom cake designs, and the new building features both a cake counter as well as a separate space (with alternate entry) for personal, private consultations for your special event.
Free street parking is available, or park in one of Kirkwood’s free two-hour lots (there’s one directly behind McArthur’s and Kirkwood Brewing Company, just off Jefferson Avenue).
